REDEFINING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR RESOURCES
The inaugural flagship program “Geoscientist to Data Scientist” is being launched in 2018. This CORE Skills Program for Leaders is a sold-out 12 week, one day per week professional education program for technical resource professionals, facilitated by specialists and academic educators.
Exclusive registration on this page for those selected personnel from our Industry Foundation Collaboration Partners – from ATCO Australia, Rio Tinto and Roy Hill.
Step back from your day-to-day responsibilities for one day a week to learn from experts how to bring new tools and types of analysis back to your day job and team, maintaining that connection directly to your role.
12 Week Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, learners will be able to:
- Transform data into actionable outcomes
- Evaluate which tool to use, why and when
- Appreciate good practice in data science
- How to work with data scientists
Immerse yourself in this breakthrough learning experience and develop a sharper perspective on the challenges facing your organization and how to leverage your technical and company background into the digital age.
“We are building peer groups of technical project roles in resources companies, to act as a community – together we are building a talent pool with greater data science literacy. If participants think they grasped the opportunities of applying the tools the first time within the program, it is going to be an order of magnitude more powerful applying the learning in follow on projects back in your organisation.”
The 12-day program is designed to suit a range of technical positions including:
- Scientists such as Chemists
- GIS professionals
- Process specialists
- Any technical role which is not solely restricted to commercial or business analysi
We anticipate the majority of appropriate applicants are likely to be Tertiary educated and with substantial industry experience i.e. 5-30 years.
Who is this course NOT for?
It is not anticipated that personnel such as data analysts and those with a business type background will apply. It is also anticipated that highly experienced data scientists are probably not likely to attend this course. The course is intended to deliver an introduction to data science with strong contextual framing to its applications in industry connecting mining, energy and technology opportunities.
Please use the self-assessment survey as part of the registration process to confirm your fit for the program.
PROGRAM PURPOSE STATEMENT
Digital technologies and the resulting flood of data promise to re-order the resources sector as we know it. Learn what it takes to harness opportunities to overcome known resource sector challenges in the Data Science era, and embrace the disruptive context we are IN.
We know that there is a real gap between the data science skills of professionals in the workforce today, and the skills that will be in high demand in the next few years. Complacency in today’s paradigm is a career- and company-limiting move. Take the next step of your journey with CORE Skills to develop better approaches and new ideas of how to identify, test, and interpret potential data science and statistical solutions.
This program will improve the clarity of your personal role through the transition, and the needs of your organisation. Your active engagement
through the program will be of direct benefit not only to you, but also to your team and ultimately your organisation. We look forward to supporting your growth in a Chatham House Rule environment with a focused cohort of peers from across mining and energy.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is designed for professionals across a variety of disciplines who use data to make decisions in the mining and energy sector. You will typically be responsible for delivering technical projects and providing regular recommendations to your leaders.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This program is a hands-on, practical exploration of the key themes of good statistical practice and on the job experimental design to create, reveal, and capture value by delivering technical analysis in resources projects. We contend that the best data scientists test assumptions underpinning their plans daily not annually. While participants will likely have deep technical domain knowledge stemming from their Tertiary education and career experience already, this program will deliver a toolkit with you and for you.
In the transition of our resources organisations to unlock the full potential created by becoming data-driven, professionals who continue to rely on their existing ways to deliver their personal productivity through analytical rather than data science projects risk missing the opportunity to harness new and powerful key drivers of performance. Release huge value for yourself by getting out of the day-to-day and business-as-usual mindsets. Step outside your business to actively develop a new toolkit and challenge yourself to think like an intrapreneur.
Professionals in the resources business today need to be able to support their leaders and the decision making in their organisations by being able to transform data into actionable outcomes and to identify opportunities to link as-yet not routinely connected data types to answer questions of value. Explore and analyse problems to increase your mastery of the tools and to develop appreciation for which tool to use, why and when. In the age of disruption, we seek to build the capability of technical professionals with amplified data science skills who are excited to provide to your organisation:
- Well-conceived pilot project proposals you wish to undertake
- Insight to link activities beyond your immediate team/routine processes such as upstream and downstream activities
- The ability to use good practice when applying tools to data, and
- The confidence and creativity to experiment with approaches to address defined actionable outcomes
Through these actions you will create and deliver greater opportunities back on the job in your organisation.
The 12-week program course is designed to deliver you five outcomes. By the end of the program we expect you will be able to:
- Select the right tool for the problem
- Determine whether data were collected and analysed correctly and efficiently
- Understand what he/she is doing
- Make wise decisions and recommendations in the face of uncertainty, and
- Articulate well the important outcomes to a non-technical audience.
Schedule and Summary
Note: Weeks 8-10 inclusive will emphasise the need for knowing how to transfer and apply the tools in a fluid business environment, specifically how to identify issues and risks in sustaining data driven models
