Jason Froud, Policy Manager at Synergy, will discuss challenges around tariffs reforms needed to ensure Western Australia's electricity sector is efficient, reliable, sustainable and affordable.

Electricity prices in Western Australia for residential and small business customers are regulated by the state government, but these prices don't reflect the actual cost of supply. The result is the total cost of supplying electricity to most customers in the SWIS is more than Synergy is allowed to charge. With the increasing uptake of distributed energy technologies such as solar PV and battery storage, the gap is growing.

Tariff reform is necessary to address a broad range of issues – including ensuring the right incentives exist to encourage the uptake of distributed energy solutions and battery storage, while also properly maintaining the electricity network and centralized generation for when it is needed. Recently, the state government took an important step towards more cost reflective tariffs by increasing the daily fixed supply charge for residential customers. However, there is still a lot more work to be done in this area. Jason will highlight some of the issues related to existing regulated tariffs, and the reforms needed to address these challenges.
