The International Space Apps Challenge is NASA’s incubator innovation program to spur innovation by convening global citizens around NASA’s open data to solve mission-relevant challenges over a 2-day community hackathon event, bringing citizens together regardless of their background or skill level.
Global citizens work with open data and APIs to solve challenges within categories designed to support NASA’s ongoing missions. As a result, participants produce hundreds of projects making open source solutions with immediate value to NASA and the global community. It’s not just about apps! Tackling challenges using robotics, data visualisation, hardware and design, the competition inspires people to learn and create using stories, code, design and ideas and display their problem-solving talents with the world.
Diverse skills, students and hackathon novices are encouraged. There is something for everyone.
How it works
Participants will organise into project teams to work on solving one of the specific challenges issued by NASA. Teams utilise publicly available NASA data to design all kinds of innovative solutions to the set Challenges. Any project teams get to pitch their solutions at the end of the weekend and there are some great prizes up for grabs. Plus two teams from the Perth competition will be selected to participate in the global judging.
